The Boksburg North SAPS in conjunction with the Benoni Trio Task Team recently arrested a 41-year-old man in Germiston.
Boksburg North SAPS communications officer Const Justice Ramaube said it was alleged that there was a man who posed as an official from the Department of Labour who continued to rob people of their money.
“The first incident allegedly took place at a well-known restaurant in North Rand Road.
“The victim said her manager called her saying there was a man from the Department of Labour looking for her. When the victim went to the man, he told her that all the people working there were undocumented and that they need to talk privately.”
Ramaube said when the victim and the suspect went to a private room, the suspect demanded R50 000 and the victim refused.
“The woman was allegedly held at gunpoint and taken to the suspects’ vehicle and they drove to the bank where the woman withdrew R30 000.”
It also came to light during investigations that the suspect did not only extort money from that restaurant but other numerous stores.
Ramaube said through investigations it was discovered that the suspect was using a rental car.
“The suspect has been allegedly residing in two different addresses in Tsakane and Wattville. He was a director of a company registered in 2012 with a business address in Tsakane.
The suspect was detained at the Boksburg North SAPS and will appear in court soon.
