Alberton truimph despite Boksburg’s valiant effort
Despite the loss, Forbes labelled the encounter as a ‘good game’.
It was one of CMH Boksburg’s better performances since the turnaround of the regular season, when they hosted Alberton at Prince George Park in their Eastern Cricket Premier League top six encounter on March 10.
Despite a valiant effort by CMH Boksburg, Alberton took the spoils by 37 runs.
After CMH Boksburg captain Adam Forbes’ pre-match coin toss record deteriorated to 1-15, which saw his team being sent to bowl first, it was the usual suspects who shone with the leather for the home side, but Alberton’s batting attack was up to the task. Opening Alberton striker JC Maritz, in particular, was dominant with a score of 73, while his teammate AD Gagiano led in the bowling stakes.
Jaques Venter (unbeaten 44) and Jacques Koster (undefeated 1) saw the travellers maximise their allotted batting overs of 50 with a total of 246.
The home team showed a much better collective batting effort in a quest to win their last game of the top six at home when they combined for a grand total of 209 in 49 overs.
The home side’s top order did particularly well in putting pressure on the scoreboard, with Forbes, local derby star Aktar Rasul, Chris Opperman, Gareth Schreuder and Jordan Hollard combining for 161 runs.
One of the encounter’s key talking points was the home side’s failure to maintain their momentum with the bat, which the visitors ultimately took advantage of.
Gagiano emerged as the biggest contributor to Boksburg’s slowdown during their batting innings, taking 6/57 in 9 overs of bowling.
Maritz took 2/50 to complete a significant performance which helped his side turn the tide.
Boksburg pair Josh Taylor and Matthew Hollard took 3/19; 2 and 3/44 apiece.
