Exciting paddling on rough waters in Cradock

Numerous paddlers from Gauteng enjoyed the eight-hour drive to Cradock to make the most of the opportunity of exciting rough water and other challenges, despite occasional swims and broken boats.

With drought conditions rife throughout the country in the past few years, river racing paddlers licked their lips as they looked forward to the guaranteed 26 cumecs of water released from the Grassridge Dam annually in Cradock.

The exciting white water rushes of huge wave trains, drops and stopper waves, as well as the three “shutes” built to avoid portaging around the weirs built on the river, add to the adrenaline-rushing excitement of the recent 80km two-day river race.

Although Franz Lottering, who lives in Boksburg, has not been seen at Gauteng local river races during the past year due to pressures of work and family, the drawcard of the exciting guaranteed white water of the A Grade river in Cradock proved too tempting.

He partnered with a friend from the Free State to enjoy the fun, finishing in six hours and 29 minutes as the 69th K2 – a top 100 finish position.
