CBC flying high with a bonus-point win

“We’re on the right track, we’re a lot better than we were last year, most of our team seems to be doing really well and we just hope we can keep going.”  - CBC captain

CBC Old Boys made it two consecutive home wins in as many encounters with a bonus-point seven-wicket win over Bedfordview on December 2.

The Boksburg outfit were asked to chase down a revised target of 170 after the Eastern Cricket Premier League encounter was revised to 48 overs when the heavens decided to open.

They obliged, and in classically ruthless fashion.

Self-proven most valuable player Mark Pearce set the home side off with a knock of 42 runs before a big contribution of 28 runs from the fellow top-order striker, Ryno van der Merwe, carried the momentum.

Nardo le Roux’s five was the only dim in CBC’s bright performance as the not-to-be-denied home XI continued to eat up into the visitors’ target.

With the target seemingly at CBC’s mercy, Dylan Bennie (unbeaten 12) and star of the day Sherwin Pillay (undefeated 76), secured the win that ensured that their side concluded the year with an important win.

Old Boys overhauled their task in 34.1 overs.

Bedfordview, who struggled with the home team’s bowling, also struggled to put pressure on the scoreboard following a stable start behind the crease lead by Clinton Groenewald (33) and Sharoz Khan (41).

With the exception of Eben Koekemoer (40), who put respect on his side’s score, later on, it had all fallen apart for the visitors.

JP Bloem added 21 but the damage had already been done.

Winning skipper, Casey Arnold, said: “It was a good win, we’ve added in one or two good players; last year was a tough year and we’ve learnt a lot from last year’s mistakes.

“We bowled nice, tight lines; the wicket at CBC is quite slow this time of the year and we got four good spinners, it’s hard to get our spinners away.

“Batting-wise, Mark Pearce has been great, Sherwin Pillay got some runs; so everyone seems to be chipping in when it counts and we seem to have a very steady team and that’s made a big difference.
