Triumph for 65-year-old in 100m at national competition
Tshepo ya Sechaba, which means ‘hope of the nation’, provides physical and emotional support to the elderly.
Members from the Tshepo ya Sechaba organisation are thrilled that one of their members, Sapula Tuma, did well at the National Competition for Older Persons held in Free State at the end of October.
A welcome party was then organised for the 65-year-old in Dawn Park for his achievement and for flying the Gauteng flag high.
Tuma said he first qualified in the regional and provincial competitions which were held in Germiston and Roodepoort, respectively.
“After I won in the provincial competition I then proceeded as the Gauteng champion at the national competition where I ran the 100m and I came first,” said Tuma.
Tuma said he has always loved running because it keeps him healthy and fit.
“It is quite vital for the elderly to halt bad habits like sitting in front of the television or reading the newspaper the whole day without exercising.”
“I encourage the elderly to get up and start exercising because it’s good for their health.”
“Even though you are not fit to run you can just walk at least for 30 minutes you’ll see it will improve your health,” Tuma said.
