Call for Glory boxing extravaganza attracts attention overseas

Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen will be facing Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu for the African Boxing Union (ABU) cruiserweight belt.

Saturday evening’s (September 1) Call to Glory box and dine tournament at Emperors Palace has grabbed the imagination of local boxing fans and is a sold-out affair.

Golden Gloves promoter Rodney Berman announced at a press conference at Emperors Palace on August 28 that it has grabbed attention internationally too and would also be televised overseas.

The fight card includes five exciting clashes featuring the likes of Ryno Liebenberg, Lusanda Komanisi and the headliner, Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu versus Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen for the African Boxing Union (ABU) cruiserweight belt.

Boxing press conferences are never short in humour and this one, which saw a rousing reception for Oosthuizen and one of the biggest in recent years as far as attendance numbers, was no different.

During the Q and A involving boxing great Brian Mitchell and boxers and trainers, Mchunu’s trainer Sean Smith, evoked a few giggles in the room when he took a slight dig at the man challenging his client Tommy Gun.

“It’s the big one,” said Smith. “Thabiso Mchunu let’s not forget, was once rated the number two cruiserweight in the world. It’s an honour to go against Harold Volbrecht, he’s great.

“Tommy, throw the running shows away, roadworks are over.”

Volbrecht, who trains Oosthuizen, said: “Tommy is doing well, he’s in good shape. It’s good to get two of the best fighters in the country to fight one another.

“Tommy is the whole package, people are going to see a good Tommy on Saturday.”

Action at the Palace gets underway from 7pm.
