Young boxer heading to SA championships
Webb is also part of an academy team preparing for the 2020 Olympics and the 2022 Commonwealth games.
Local amateur boxer Cayden Webb has earned his second call-up to participate in the South African Boxing Championships scheduled to take place next month in Limpopo.
Webb, 17, who trains at the Hammer Gym in Boksburg, earned the invitation after he was crowned the Gauteng champion for the second time in Pretoria recently.
The Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen student aims to reproduce the form that earned him the SA boxing title in Dundee during last year’s championships.
He is the holder of the Gauteng and SA titles.
Looking ahead to the tournament in Limpopo, Webb said: “It feels good to be the defending SA champ. Hard work pays off.
“I’m putting more effort and training hard,” said the pugilist, who is also a cross country runner.
“Training is going very well. I took two weeks off after the Gauteng championships and I’m going to continue to work hard.
“They usually say champions train with champions, and I train with the likes of Tommy (Oosthuizen), which is awesome.”
Quizzed on the challenges of being an amateur pugilist, Webb added: “You have to give up most of your time, but sometimes a lot of your time is wasted because tournaments are not always well organised. So you find yourself wasting your time.”
Webb will also put his perfect undefeated amateur record on the line in Limpopo, which reads 18-0 to date. – @SabeloBoksburg
