United on course for a home semi-final

United will be travelling to Vanderbijlpark to face NWU in their penultimate game of this year’s Valke Peregrine League’s round-robin phase – before concluding with a home match against Brakpan the following Wednesday.

East Rand United kept North-West University (NWU) scoreless in the second-half before completing a routine 46-6 bonus-point win in their Valke Peregrine League encounter at The Graveyard Stadium in Reiger Park on July 14.

United added 22 points to their first-half tally en route to the win, having lead 24-6 during the interval.

This kept the Reiger Park outfit firmly on course to host one of the two semi-finals scheduled for August 4. The Springs Rugby Club, who’ve created an unassailable gap at the top of the standings, have already secured their home semi-final.

United are favourites, over third-placed Vereeniging, to host the second semi.

The encounter saw United’s lock pairing of Bakkies Bakumeni and Jacques van Tonder score tries each, with the backline contributing five five-pointers.

Right wing JP Fleming grabbed a brace, with the versatile Jackie Jonkers, who was deployed on the left wing in place of Leon Potgieter, who started on the bench, also scoring a pair of dot downs. Half back Tiaan Ramat scored his side’s seventh try.

Meanwhile, the visitors were only afforded two penalties to take back to Vanderbijlpark.

United left centre Reagan Fourie, who starred at number 10 in the Kempton Park route recently, slotted four conversions along with a drop goal.

Elsewhere in the day’s curtain-raisers, United’s u-21s saw-off the visitors 34-26 before the second team also limited the travellers to six points in the afternoon’s penultimate clash.

Scorers: United: Tries – JP Fleming (2), Jackie Jonkers (2), Tiaan Ramat, Jacques van Tonder, Bakkies Bakumeni. Conversions – Reagan Fourie (4). Drop goals – Reagan Fourie – @SabeloBoksburg
