A driver of a VW Polo Vivo is counting his blessings after managing to survive a freak accident on Main Reef Road, near the intersections of Field and Main Reef roads in Angelo informal settlement.
The Polo Vivo reportedly veered off the road, hit a stationary vehicle, parked on the side of the road, sending the driver into the air, before the Polo overturned and landed inside a shack located a few metres away from the road.
Although this publication contacted both the EMPD and SAPS for details of the accident and they said there’s no record found on their system, according to eyewitnesses on the scene, the accident happened just after 7.30pm on Friday, July 13.
One of the witnesses said the westbound car veered off the road, hit the parked bakkie and went flying before it landed on its roof inside one of the street vendors’ shacks.
The source said the driver told her that one of the tyres of the vehicle burst and caused him to lose control of the car.
Fearing the worst when they saw the mangled vehicle, shocked witnesses and onlookers approached the Polo Vivo to free the driver they thought was trapped inside, but they were more surprised to see the driver standing outside, next to his car.
Emergency services and the Ekurhuleni fire department arrived on the scene to assist the person involved, but it remains unclear whether the person involved had suffered other injuries, other than the cuts.
