Billy Oosthuizen wins EFC 71 bout in just 34 seconds

On the night, Dalcha Lungiambula became the EFC organisation’s third double champion – after Dricus du Plessis and Amanda Lino - and now stands at the very top of the roster of champions.

EFC 71, which took place at the East Rand’s playground Carnival City on June 23, had everything – an amazing crowd, controversial refereeing calls and fights for the ages.

The fight between Pitbull Dojo Boksburg’s promising star Billy Oosthuizen and Jasen van der Merwe was well supported but it ended due to a controversial decision by the referee.

It cut the contest just 34 seconds into the bout. The win was awarded to Oosthuizen to improve his EFC record to 2-0-0 via TKO.

Oosthuizen has been finishing off his opponents in the first round, and in all cases clearly, but this one was rather embarrassing for the striker who was eager to go on.

“The fight was stopped a bit early but hey, the ref is always right,” he said.

“I wanted to pound more as I knew it wasn’t over. I wanted to let him feel the hell. It felt a bit embarrassing, the fight should have carried on but no doubt I would’ve have won, I mean I did drop the guy two times in 30 seconds.”

Van der Merwe dropped to 1-6-0.

In a fight for the ages and certainly EFC’s biggest fights to date, light heavyweight champion Dalcha Lungiambula defeated then heavyweight champion Andrew ‘One Gear’ van Zyl in an absorbing contest to be crowned the new EFC heavyweight champion.

In a mission widely concluded as impossible considering van Zyl’s experience and near-20kg advantage, Dalcha, fondly known as ‘Champion’, rised to the occasion and lived up to his nickname – winning at least four of the allotted five rounds.

The bout went to the judges and the DRC international took it via split decision. How one official saw van Zyl as the winner baffled many.
