Owls suffer damaging defeat in league
The hosts exposed the Owls’ glaring defensive frailties with the PG Park outfit conceding 110 points in two weeks following their 48-24 loss to neighbours East Rand United.
Springs Rugby Club compounded matters at TW Boksburg when the hosts scored 62 points to walk away as comfortable 26-point bonus point victors in their Peregrine League clash at Olympia Park on Saturday.
The Owls’ defeat speaks of a pattern that can be pinpointed to the number of many missed tackles; an issue captain Johan Labuschagne has admitted.
The feisty halfback said: “I have no idea to what’s going on to be honest because we’re a much better team than we were last year. There obviously seems to be a problem but we’ll fix it. We have to put in more work at training.
“We need to better our basics, especially on defence, our one-on-one defending needs to improve.”
Owls vice-chairman Sean Scheepers echoed the skipper’s views.
“There is a couple of new guys in the side, guys are still finding their feet but we’re mainly making basic mistakes and wrong decision making at crucial times.
“Our u-21s and seconds are showing a lot of improvement in the last couple of games. The first side made basic errors which cost them.”
The seniors did pick up a bonus point for their five tries courtesy of a double brace from none other than David Woolls and blindside flank John Spence. Front row forward Juan Brummer also crossed the try-line with kicker Adriaan van der Nest adding seven points from two conversions and a penalty. Replacement back Donavin Putter also converted two tries.
Springs completed a dominant day at home with the senior side win which followed a 23-3 win in the second team game and a 32-22 triumph in the u-21 clash.
