Owls, United gearing up for 2018 Peregrine League season
It is time for local rugby again!
Boksburg’s two rugby representatives in the Valke Peregrine League, the Boksburg Rugby Club (Owls) and East Rand United are hard at training ahead of what is building up to be an exciting season.
The Owls, who have entered a new era under new coach Francois Erasmus, have been aggressive in the off-season transfer window, acquiring between 10 and 15 players to bolster their chances.
United have also done a few jobs in the transfer market with coach Stephan Nel keeping his cards to his chest as far as revealing the new acquisitions. The United trainer, however, did give one name away in the form of Lourens Boddington – a no 10 from Harlequins.
Boddington comes in as a replacement for Andy Huysamen, who chose to move on after last season. Flyer Cameron Lentoor completes the off-season exodus from a United point of view.
Meanwhile, Erasmus also chose not to reveal any names from Boksburg’s new players.
When the Advertiser quizzed both trainers of their respective club’s training progression, they responded: “It’s going very well, the team is consistent, 80-90 per cent of the guys who were here last season are here and we’ve picked up where we left off,” commented Nel.
Erasmus responded, “It’s actually going well. We had approximately eight practice sessions before the December holiday where we worked on skill and fitness. We started our preparations again in early January for the season and so far, so good.
“It’s going quite well, we’re not there yet but we will see after our first game (a friendly on February 10).
“We hope our new players can make a contribution to the club.”
