Hanco Nel: one man ARMy at SA champs

Arm wrestling king Hanco Nel underlined his authority when he was crowned SA champion at the South African Arm Wrestling Federation (SAAWF) championships on Saturday evening, November 4.

Nel, however, shared the men’s 110kg+ crown with Danie Stroebel, who won in the left arm round, with Nel dominating in the right hand battle.

But the evening belonged to Nel, from Nelspruit, who also won the strongest arm competition, a separate contest on the night at TW Agterplaas at Prince George Park.

The SA crown sealed a successful year for Nel, who also won the Rocksburg Winter Challenge in June at the same venue.

In the men’s u-100kg, Ludwig Schnettler also successfully defended his winter challenge title when he won in both left and right rounds.

Alma du Plessis took top honours in the ladies competition. Du Plessis, competing in the u-80kg division, starred in both the left and right arm rounds.

Therese Fourie and Zelna Potgieter completed the top three in the right arm round. Only the champion and Potgieter competed in the left arm leg.

The tournament was an official competition held under the SAAWF banner.

Tournament organiser Francois Bezuidenhout of the Rocksburg Arm Wrestling Club said: “I was nervous at first but I had confidence that everything would run smoothly because I love what I do. I got a lot of people that were very impressed – even my sponsor TW Profile Services said that he will support us again.

“I want to start arm wrestling in high schools as well and want to start with schools in the Boksburg, Benoni and Kempton Park area; people who are interested can contact me.”

Bezuidenhout, who was also recently named the new vice-president of SAAWF, can be contacted on 064 753 6525.

The championships were hosted by the Rocksburg Arm Wrestling Club.
