Charity Mile opens Highveld racing season

The Charity Mile will boast some of South Africa’s celebrities giving their time to a charity.

One of the most prestigious horseracing events which open the Highveld season Summertime, The Charity Mile, will boast some of South Africa’s celebrities giving their time to a charity.

The Charity Mile will take place on November 4 at Turffontein Racecourse and is presented by Emperors Palace. The gates will open at 11am.

The event will see charities, celebrities and media paired to a specific racehorse, who will run in the Charity Mile Grade 2, to determine what portion of the R1-million goes to their respective charities.

The concept is a simple one. A total of 16 horses are paired with 16 celebrities, charities and media partners and everyone unites on the day to support one common goal which is to support those less fortunate.

Caxton South will be representing their specific charity on the day together with their celebrities and racehorse.

Last year’s event was won by New Predator and it was something of a family affair with Gavin Lerena the jockey in the irons while his cousin, and now IBO cruiserweight world champion boxer, Kevin Lerena representing the Peermont Education Trust – Bursary Programme.

Other celebrities who were part of the glittering affair last year included Amanda du-Pont, a darling of the South African social scene as well as popular Expresso hosts Zoe Brown and Katlego Maboe.

Rapper and TV personality Nomuzi Mabena wowed all with a dramatic, flowing dress while actress Michaela Russell, of Isidingo fame, was also a leading contender in the fashion stakes.

The best place to race from on the day is the popular City Deck area where you can enjoy a variety of delicious tastes while overlooking the thrilling racing action on the track.

The Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile also forms part of the Summer In The City which means a host of fantastic days at the racecourse which culminates in the Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup, the jewel in Johannesburg racing’s crown, at the end of November.

The Charity Mile race day also offers the perfect opportunity to show off some of the finest fashions and trends this summer. There is no particular theme to think of which means anything goes as far as your interpretation of a day at the races is concerned.
