Motorbike rider caught doing 186 km/h on N12

Nine motorists were arrested for speeding on Saturday, September 2, and Sunday, September 3, between 6am and midday.

This is when the EMPD High Speed Unit targeted the stretch of the N12 eastbound between Atlas and Trichardts roads.

EMPD spokesperson chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the operation was the result of complaints about excessive speeding on this stretch of road.

“Excessive speeding exposes law-abiding motorists to danger and horrific accidents,” he said.

Four motorists were arrested on Saturday and five on Sunday.

“The four arrested on Saturday were all male drivers in sedans, who registered speeds of between 165 km/h and 175 km/h on this 120 km/h stretch of the freeway,” said Kgasago.

“Of the five arrested on Sunday, one was a female in an Audi Q5, nabbed doing 164 km/h and a male on a BMW motorcycle clocked at 186 km/h.”

All the arrestees were detained at Boksburg North police station on charges of reckless and negligent driving and subsequently released after posting a bail of R1500 each.

They are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
