The Suicide Squad geared up for the festive Zando Tshwane 10’s
The festive Zando Tshwane 10s is back for the second year and it’s even bigger and better.
For the first time this year, a women’s rugby league will join in the contest, with Springbok, provincial and University of Pretoria players taking to the field.
Known as the Social Olympics, the Zando Tshwane 10s will see 150 teams contest across seven sporting codes over two days at the Harlequins rugby club in Pretoria. The event takes place on August 25 and 26.
While the rugby headlines the event, teams will also be competing in netball, volleyball, touch rugby, five-a-side soccer, lawn bowls and dodgeball.
The Zando Tshwane 10s caters for all sports lovers – from the legends and professionals to the social squads. There’s something for everyone.
The sporting jamboree will also see local rugby side, the Suicide Squad, feature again. The team, which includes players from local rugby clubs in the East Rand, including the Boksburg rugby club, compete in the social league. They just fell short last year in the final going 7-19 down to The Piranhas.
Their road to last year’s final was built on no-nonsense defending which saw them concede just seven tries.
The team was formed last year leading up to the tournament’s inauguration. It strives to participate in every 10s tournament around the country.
It’s eyeing to also take part in the Zando 10s series that will be held in Cape Town, Tshwane and Durban, next year.
A statement from the team thanked all its sponsors for making it possible for them to participate in the event and they hope to see many of their supporters.
The inaugural tournament saw some 40 rugby teams, 30 volleyball teams, 20 netball teams and over 15 dodgeball teams taking part.
The 10s series, which began in Cape Town a decade ago, is the brainchild of former Bok captain Bobby Skinstad, Stormers coach Robbie Fleck and friend Ron Rutland.
Supporters can also expect to meet a bevy of sports celebrities.
