Watch: Companies open hearts on Mandela Day
The long-awaited International Mandela Day was celebrated on July 18 across the country.
People from all walks of life spent their 67 minutes to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday by making a difference in their communities.
Acting on the idea that each person has the power to change the world, Ravenswood-based Tuckers Inc spent their 67 minutes painting the bedrooms at House of Mercy.
The law firm donated paint, cooking and cleaning materials as well as lunch for the day for the people of House of Mercy.
Monash Pillay, director at Tuckers Inc, said: “Mandela Day should not be celebrated for one day but it should be our daily responsibility, especially companies, to make a continual difference.

“As they say, ‘charity begins at home’, so we decided to spend our 67 minutes at House of Mercy because it’s close to our firm. We would also like to thank Fillrite Paints Boksburg for sponsoring us with paint and the paint materials.”

The law firm shared one quote from Nelson Mandela that says, “A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”
* Meanwhile, the Sunward Park Spar also did its bit for Mandela Day.
The local Spar donated a voucher to the New Beginnings Care Centre to shop until they drop at the store.

The staff of the store also visited Tambo Memorial Hospital, where they handed out fruit and toy parcels in the children’s wards.
For adults they handed out fruit parcels in ward nine.

Emilio Pieterse from Sunward Park Spar said: “We are still new in the area as we opened our doors in February this year. We thought it would be good to do something good for the community to show our love and appreciation to them.”
