Power duo win at the Woman of the Stature Awards

Power duo mother and daughter, Madelain and Shannon Roscher, have emerged victorious after winning respectively in their nominated categories in the 2017 Woman of Stature Awards.

The awards ceremony took place at Emperors Palace on March 11.

The two run a business and an NPO in Boksburg.

Madelain was nominated in the Woman in Media category, and Shannon in the Youth Ambassador category.

The theme for the awards was “Shine like the star you are”, and the duo captured the theme in both ability and appearance.

Madelain is the managing director of PR Worx, while Shannon is the managing director of an NPO called DeskBags.

DeskBags produces functional, eco-friendly school bags that transform into a portable desk.

In her acceptance speech, Madelain said as a woman and a role model in business, she is often asked what more can she do to empower women.

“I’m a firm believer in the concept ‘pay it forward’. That is primarily why I accepted the nomination for the Woman of Stature Awards, as it represents a cause that is close and dear to my own heart.

“This organisation is dedicated to empowering, inspiring and improving the lives of others and to expanding each individual’s leadership potential,” she said.

She encouraged women to collaborate and work together to uplift other women.

“I employ many women, and over the course of the 16 years I have managed PR Worx, I’ve emphasised the need to provide women in public relations with significant leadership opportunities, community involvement and professional development to inspire their careers.

“It is with much pride that I today see many of my protégés throughout this industry in senior or even board positions, and yes, sometimes competing directly with me.

“That sometimes is the price of empowering people,” Madelain said.

Excited Shannon said she was thrilled to be chosen as the winner.

“Winning this award shows that you can achieve anything you set your mind to, regardless of your age. The platform of Woman of Stature Youth Ambassador will considerably forward the mission to provide DeskBags to schools as widely as possible.

“It is incredible that my mother and I are winners in the same competition. My mother has been an enormous inspiration to me and many other women, and today we both push each other to work even harder for our respective causes,” she said.

Describing her relationship with her daughter, Madelain said their bond expands on a typical mother-daughter relationship and that they are inseparable best friends, as they see each other almost every day.

“Shannon is an incredible young woman and totally deserving of the Youth Ambassador award. She is one the strongest women I know personally and professionally.

“She has never shied away from a challenge, hard work or getting her hands dirty. Her work ethic and her vision to make South Africa a better place through education is both admirable and highly appreciated by the thousands of children whose lives she has already changed,” said Madelain.

Launched in April 2013, Woman of Stature’s purpose is to inspire and empower women from all walks of life, as well as to raise awareness and much-needed funds for charities through various projects and fundraising initiatives.

All proceeds raised will go towards Woman of Stature’s charities, including Cansa and HospiceWits, and its own Five Pillars of Empowerment programme, which trains, develops and uplifts women across South Africa.
