Dawn Park Primary teacher now a proud author

Local primary school teacher Grushcenka Ruiters has released her first book, in which teaches children about death and helps them to deal with it.

The book, titled Mommy’s Gone and Daddy’s Forever is about a family that loses the father of the home through death.

“The reason I wrote this book was to encourage children to read and hopefully they will read something that will spark their interest.”

“Having taught Grade Four learners previously, I realised that even at that age, children cannot read. As a teacher, I understand the importance of reading. I want to encourage the idea of reading for pleasure in young children,” said Ruiters, who teaches Grade R learners at Dawn Park Primary School.

The teacher said that the writing process was not too difficult. Working with children every day helped her to complete the project.

“I would also love to see children’s vocabulary expand, their imagination grow and also their language and cognitive skills being stimulated. My aim is to enrich the minds of these learners and develop language and literacy skills, as they will be reading the book,” Ruiters said.

The author grew up in the Free State, where she lived with her grandmother and two sisters. She attended Grade One to 11 at Hoërskool Heilbron and finished her matric in 2008 at Elsburg Hoërskool.

“Growing up was fun. We lived in a rather small town and had a very comfortable upbringing. I had everything in life to be successful and reach my full potential. Professional teaching was never really an interest of mine, but as I grew older, I had a desire to teach,” Ruiters said.

She began studying public relations management (PR) at the University of Johannesburg, but dropped out after the first year when she realised she had no interest in it.

She went on to study Early Childhood Development at Potchefstroom University.

The teacher said she hopes the book will bring her recognition as a renowned author so that she won’t simply be known as an educator.

The book is available on Amazon.
