Rotary Foundation celebrates centenary

This year the Rotary Foundation will be celebrating the centenary of its charter. Clubs have been encouraged worldwide to participate in these celebrations.

The Foundation Committee of D9400 offered a prize to the club which came forward with the best centenary celebration.

Boksburg Lake president Nicky Savvides suggested that his club should enjoy their celebrations by having a cruise on the luxury Vaal cruiser, “Spirit of Jen”.

This cruiser is not only famous in the Vaal Triangle, but also in Rotary Circles. A number of events for clubs and D9400 have taken place on it, proudly presented by the Rotarian Paul Harris, fellow owners of Stonehaven on Vaal in Vanderbijlpark.

They were once more happy to assist Rotary and help Boksburg Lake put together a fun family breakfast cruise.

Some of the younger guests drove down from Boksburg and Benoni on their motorcycles.

Stonehaven’s only request was that Rotary Club Vanderbijlpark should also be involved in the event as they are members of that club.

This request made Boksburg Lake decide to invite as many clubs as possible to join in the celebration.

In all, 16 clubs were represented on the cruise, including those of district governor Grant Daly and district governor elect Jankees Schlicher. Present and past chairs of the D9400 foundation committee also attended, including past district governors Greg Stathacopoulos and Francis Callard.

Also among the guests were representatives of two radio stations and the local newspaper, all great Rotary supporters.

Suitably, a total of 100 guests, one person for each of the Rotary Foundation, boarded the “Spirit of Jen”.

Stathacopoulos addressed the guests on the Rotary Foundation and impressed a number of young visitors, who expressed their surprise at the admirable activities of the Rotary Foundation.

This initiative raised much awareness and funds for the foundation.

Boksburg Lake wishes all club whose celebration events are still upcoming the best of luck and hopes that they will all have awesome events.
