CAUTION: Take note of Parvo Virus outbreak

The Boksburg SPCA urgently advises the public that it has been informed by several vets in the area that they are seeing a high number of puppies suffering from the contagious disease, parvovirus (cat flu).

“Parvovirus is a preventive disease and we ask that pet owners please take their pups to their vets to have them vaccinated,” said manager of the Boksburg SPCA, Maggie Mudd.

“If pet owners are unable to afford the cost of having this carried out at a private veterinarian, we ask that they come into the Boksburg SPCA and complete an almoning form.

“This is a type of ‘means test’ and asks income and expenditure, as well as how many dependants a person may have. From this the society is able to see if we are able to assist with the vaccination.”

It is important to remember, though, that the Boksburg SPCA will not vaccinate any animal unless it had already been sterilised, or if the owner agrees to, and pays up front for, the future sterilisation of the puppy.

“Please keep your pup or dog safe and ensure that it is up-to-date with vaccines.”
