WARNING: Theft out of motor vehicle spike

Since the middle of August, numerous reports of theft out of motor vehicle have been filed.

Most of them occurred at the malls, shopping centres and hotels.

According to the Boksburg North SAPS communications officer, Capt Juanita Coetzer, in most of these cases laptops, purses, cellphones, cash, iPads, cameras and handbags were taken.

Previous warnings have been issued to the community.

“Please do not leave your valuables in your vehicles when going shopping,” said Coetzer.

She added that it has been reported that people went shopping at the mall and shopping centres, but their handbags, purses, with cards and cash and cellphones, were stolen from their vehicles.

“Do not withdraw cash and go to your vehicle to put the cash in it, and then return to the bank or shopping centre. The criminals are watching you,” she warned.

When you report a case of theft out of a motor vehicle, Coetzer urged that you stay at the scene where it happened and that you should call the SAPS to come to you.

“It is a crime scene and you cannot leave the scene; therefor it is questionable when you report this at the police station the day after.”
