Owls hit new low with 81-26 drubbing
It was possibly one of the lowest points in the Boksburg Rugby Club’s proud history, if not the lowest, as the Owls were hammered 81-26 by a resurgent Vereeniging side.
This was a Valke Peregrine League second round clash on Saturday, June 25.
Vereeniging were a wounded animal after a major upset loss to the Owls’ neighbours East Rand United in their previous game, and they were left desperate to make amends.
The Owls couldn’t have played Fanie van Wyk’s men at a worse time as a rampant Vereeniging scored more than eight tries.
“We got most guys who were injured back and we started playing rugby like we have planned,” said Vereeniging mentor, Van Wyk, when asked about the ruthless performance.

Boksburg’s meagre representation on the scoreboard arrived courtesy of tries by Willem Botes (brace), Markus Leonard and Morne Ferguson. PJ Beukes added the extras with three conversions.
The visitors’ afternoon was made longer when Adriaan van der Nest and eighthman Wilbur Harris from the Owls received red and yellow respectively.
Harris received his yellow with 10 minutes remaining, forcing the visitors to finish with 13 men.
Owls coach Marcell Fourie summed up the match by saying: “It was by far one of my worst days as a coach. We just didn’t pitch, we were nowhere.”
The Owls did cash in a bonus point to their credit, but it served as little consolation in the face of a superb Vereeniging performance.
