Brennan Peters chats about the challenges of coaching the Blues

Incumbent Boksburg Football Club coach Brennan Peters had a chat with the Advertiser.

The 33-year-old took over the reins from Premier league-winning coach Garth Cooley at the beginning of the new Super League season.

The Advertsier asked:

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in an area called Delmore Park.

Where do you live?

I currently live in Libradene in Boksburg

How did you get involved in football?

I played football from the age of four and never stopped loving the sport.

What motivates you?

Change for the better motivates me.

Best footballer you’ve coached?

Tyler Fisch. He is one amazing footballer: he eats, drinks and breathes football. He understands what he wants and what he wants to achieve in football.

How does your average day look like?

Very busy. I work in the telecommunications industry, so I never stop working.

If you had to describe the type of coach you are in three words – what would they be?

Passionate, hard working and driven.

What are your hobbies?

Coach football. And play a little.

Moving on to matters on the pitch football…

Coach I imagine that there’s more pressure coming into a winning team as opposed to coming in to fix a team that’s down, you obviously took over a champion team – how have you dealt with the pressure to continue the team’s winning habit?

It has not been easy coming into a champion team that is true, and having to build a whole new one was an even bigger challenge, but with the help of some of the older players they helped me ease into it. After the first few weeks I wanted to throw in the towel, however the team kept me going. I came with a new style of play, a new coaching system; new tactics and to do that to a team is very difficult. But we managed to get through it, and yes we are a team now.

Is this your first time coaching Boksburg?

No.

Which other teams have you coached?

Boksburg FC only. Started at the club about five years ago at Under-14 level then U15. Then my son Tristan started at Boksburg at U-5 and the I moved to U7 and U8 level.

What have been the major challenges you’ve had to face coaching the Blues thus far?

Getting full player commitments on a regular basis. Knowing that these players have normal lives, work normal jobs and can’t always be at football.

When you came in as coach – what did you want to add/change to the team?

I brought a new dynamic to the team, a new way of playing and new training systems, and a full-on coaching team. There are three of us including Sheldon Olsen and Vivian Martiz.

What’s the team’s goal this season?

To stay up in the Super League.

How have you found life in the Super League thus far?

Not as easy as I expected. I expected a lower level of football in this league. I was surprised.

Are you happy with the team’s progress?

Yes we are making good progress: small steps in the right direction. – @SabeloBoksburg
