Help desks for online school registrations

Technical glitches seem to continue plaguing the Gauteng Department of Education's online registration system.

Gauteng implements online school registration system

In the wake of the frustration expressed by parents, help desks have been set up at Boksburg High, Sunward Park High and Oosrand Secondary schools.

At Boksburg High School, parents flocked to the school on Friday, April 22, to receive help with registering their children online.

The department went online this year after having won the right in court last year to have the final say on how many and which children are placed in a school‚ in consultation with the school’s governing body.

This will also resolve issues of overcrowding in schools at the start of every academic year.

According to Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, the paper-based application system caused problems, including forms going missing and schools providing incorrect information on how many children had applied.

Online school registration system deemed to be annoying

An online system is therefore meant to help the department to establish in advance how many pupils would be attending each school.

Parents are thus expected to register their details online if applying for the first time or verify their details if they’ve already registered.

After registration on the site‚ parents are meant to receive an SMS confirming their application and then have two weeks to apply at the school in person.

Parents will have to bring their ID‚ the child’s birth certificate and proof of their work or home address to the school.

The department of education is then supposed to provide registration facilities in areas in which parents are unlikely to have internet access.

Applicants may apply online by visiting www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.

The online system went live on April 11 and will close on June 1.

Parents who do not have internet access can visit help desks in their districts for assistance.
