Extension of Ravenswood Road underway to ease traffic
Construction of a new road, to reduce mind-numbing traffic congestion, is expected to commence soon.
Ward 22’s Clr Benno Robinson handed over the site for the construction of the extended R4-million Ravenswood Road to project site operators on March 10.
No homes will be affected, as the road will run through an open piece of land.
Ravenswood Road currently ends on Trichards Road and will now be extended all the way to connect with Bartlett Road.
It will probably be open as an option for motorists who drive on North Rand Road, between Trichardts and Bartlett roads.
Robinson said that they have been fighting for the road to be built for the past three years.
“It is currently the biggest single project in this ward,” he said, adding that the project will employ local labour, thus creating employment in the ward.
Also at the site handover was resident engineer Kenneth Mojaki, of Ndoda Consulting Engineers, who read out all the rules and regulation to the contractors, Agisang Projects.
The rules read that the ward councillor will, through the Community Liaison Officer (CLO), Victor Seeiso, issue a list of all subcontractors.
However, it is the responsibility of the contractor to interview and appoint the most competent subcontractor.
During construction period, still to be determined in terms of length of time, traffic deviations will be controlled by flag men as well as sufficient road signage.
Mojaki assured the public that an environmental impact assessment will be carried out to ensure no negative impact on the environment.
“The contractor will apply for water draw points as they are not allowed to use water from dams or fire hydrants unless instructed by the engineer or Ekurhuleni Metro officials,” said Mojaki.
“The contractor has also been instructed to dump all spoil material on the metro’s approved dump sites.
“Dust control will also be managed at all times and barricading of open trenches is to be in place all the time.”
The CLO will be in charge of communications when passing on information to the general community affected by the project.
Notices will be issued on the project and will also be delivered on impacted households.
