Security guards, police come under attack from armed mob

An armed mob, believed to be illegal miners from Springs, reportedly attacked Mapogo Security guards in two separate incidents and opened fire on police.

Reiger Park SAPS station commander, Lieut-Col Sipho Mathebula, confirmed the attacks, adding that the personnel were attacked on November 29 and December 1.

“The mob hurled stones at the security guards stationed at the ERPM property on Commissioner Street, Reiger Park, during the early hours of December,” he said.

”Police reacted to a call-out in the area and, when they arrived at the scene, the attackers opened fire on them; they retaliated and a shootout ensued.”

It is, however, unclear if anyone was injured in the attacks, but Mathebula confirmed that malicious damage to property and attempted murder cases were registered.

The motive for the attack is still unknown, and the attackers are still on the run. -@FanieFLK
