Spike in domestic violence demands action

Police reports have revealed that the Reiger Park police have been receiving a high volume of drunken domestic violence complaints of late.

Drug-related crime also remains a cause for concern.

The reports indicate that at least 11 people, mostly women and children, fall victim to domestic violence per week.

According to the Reiger Park SAPS’s Sgt Mashudu Phathela, alcohol is involved in almost all the incidents reported to the police, and this type of crime is rife over weekends.

“It is very difficult for us to police this type of crime, because most of the attacks happen indoors. However, we appeal to members of the community to respect the human rights of others,” he said.

“We are in the process of teaming up with other relevant organisations to address the problem by embarking on a series of awareness campaigns on domestic violence.
