Apparent metro incompetence leads to dangerous hole in road

Residents in Hughes are angry at the Ekurhuleni Metro for failing to fill a huge hole which is now a danger to traffic.

After repairing a water leak from a pipe situated under the surface of Francois Street, more than a month ago, the hole has yet to be filled.

According to Riaan van Niekerk, whose father lives in Francois Street, this was the third time he is aware of that water from the same pipe started leaking through the tar.

“Almost two years ago we had a burst water pipe in the street in front of my father’s house,” he said.

“We phoned the municipality and informed them of the burst pipe. They fixed the pipe within two weeks, but closed the hole only after three to four months.

“This happened twice and then, a few weeks ago, the same pipe burst again.”

Van Niekerk reported the new leak to the municipality.

“They fixed the pipe, but again with the wrong methods,” he said.

”They only clamped the old rusted pipe instead of replacing it. The leak has again been stopped, at least, but the road surface has a deep hole.

“We just want the road fixed again.”

No response has been received from the metro.
