Bringing health services to the people
The Rotarians in South Africa, together with PEPFAR, MTN SA Foundation, the SABC, and Caxton, partnered to host the third Rotary Family Health Days campaign, from October 7 to 9.
This was a national campaign and the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, invited all community members in South Africa to attend the campaign, which was run at 120 sites.
In Boksburg, the health campaign was held at the Light of the World Divine Power Ministry, in the Angelo informal settlement.
Over 500 people attended and were checked by the health officials for various illnesses.
The community had access to free TB screening and testing, HIV counselling and testing (HCT), Vitamin A supplementation and healthy lifestyle information, immunisations and health screening (blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and family planning).
Organisations such as the Boksburg North Clinic, Boksburg Lake Rotary Club, Boksburg Knights of Pendragon, St Francis Care Centre, The Aurum Institute and Benoni Van Rhyn Lions Club rendered their services to the community members.
Linda Stokes, a coordinator for the health project, said: “We held this campaign in order to bring health to the people, as we have observed that many people here in Angelo struggle with transport to get to local clinics, which are far from them.”
