‘Overweight’ Tommy outguns Berridge
Tommy Oosthuizen beat Robert Berridge on points on Saturday night, June 6 at Emperors Palace to ensure the New Zealander did not claim the vacant IBO light-heavyweight title.
The tall South African won the bout by 117-111 on two cards and 116-112 on the third.
The victory, which enabled him to remain undefeated after 28 professional fights, did not make up for him losing the IBO light-heavyweight title on the scales.
It, however, did prevent Berridge from claiming the title.
The undefeated Oosthuizen tipped the scales at 80.06kg, 710grams over the light heavyweight limit of 79.35kg .
The result left the IBO Light heavyweight World Title for the first time vacant.
Oosthuizen, who extended his professional record to 25-0-2 when he defeated Ryno Liebenberg for the title, back in March, clashed with Berridge at the Golden Gloves’ D-Day Tournament.
The fight was dropped to the undercard of the Golden Gloves Promotions tournament.
