St Dominic’s water polo starlet heading to Serbia

The u-16 South African national schools water polo team will be taking on top countries when they tour Serbia in July.

The 15-girls squad, which is made up of 13 players and two reserves, includes St. Dominic’s student Georgina Hammon.

She was included in the squad, following her participation in the two-day trials for the national team selection in Durban.

The trials, which were held on April 9 and 10, saw girls from all corners of the country battle it out in swim tests and matches to earn selection.

The tour will run from June 30 to July 15.

“I was extremely overwhelmed and it felt surreal when I learnt of my selection,” said Hammon.

“It’s a dream come true and it is just proof that hard work and dedication pays off,” said the winger, who also plays driver.

“This is by far my biggest achievement; I have played for Eastern Gauteng for four years consecutively and have only made nationals this year.”

The South Africans are set to face the best in the business with hosts and current European and world champions Serbia and defending Olympic champions Hungary also in the mix. – @SabeloBoksburg
