Police vehicle under attack from angry mob

An irate mob pelted police officers with stones when they attended a scene involving mob justice, on March 8.

The Jerusalem informal settlement erupted into chaos on Sunday afternoon, when the police tried to rescue a suspected robber from an angry mob.

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese, two police officers responded to the mob violence, but when they arrived, the crowd threw stones and bricks at the approaching van.

“Officers repeatedly tried to rescue the man from the mob, but their efforts proved futile,” said Ngobese.

“Another police van arrived, and only after two warning shot were fired into the air did order return to Jerusalem.

“By then, the victim had already succumbed to his injuries.

“The police officers did not sustain any injuries, but the state vehicle was damaged.”

Police are investigating the attacks.
