Boksburg complete double over Daveyton
Boksburg Cricket Club captain Len Meyer led his side to a 45-run win over Daveyton, in their second round tie of the Promotion League, at the Prince George Park ground, on Sunday, February 22.
The win completed the double for Boksburg over the visitors, with the PG Park outfit emerging triumphant in their reverse fixture, in November, last year, at the same venue, with a 114-run win.
Following his loss in the pre-match coin toss, Meyer and his side were sent into bat in what initially seemed like a masterstroke decision by Daveyton captain Itumeleng Motha.
Boksburg’s top-order imploded, with openers John Haywood (5), Michael Holtzhauzen (duck), JP van Staden (3) and Freddie Whitehorne (1) bowing out for a combined, meagre nine.
Despite the early slump, the home side remained resolute and their skipper was instrumental in their win, finishing with 37 runs, the highest score in his team, before producing a top-drawer performance with the leather, by claiming six wickets in six overs and conceding only 18 runs.
“I once again lost the toss and we were sent to bat in a shaky start, with our top order struggling again,” said Meyer.
“Fortunately, our middle and bottom order stood up to take us to a defendable score on a difficult wicket early on, with the bowlers doing the rest for us.”
The home side went on to finish with 177, after 41 of their allotted 50 overs, before bowling out their opponents for 132 after 34.2 overs.
Daveyton duo Christmos Mpenyane and Philane Kubeka stood out for their side in the bowling stakes – taking a hat-trick of wickets apiece. – @SabeloBoksburg
