Boksburg Cricket Club makes winning start

The Boksburg Cricket Club’s Promotion League side resumed its 2014/15 campaign with a win against Duduza’s Premier Reserve XI, at Prince George Park, on Sunday, January 11.

The locally-based side began the New Year with a four-wicket win in the Crossover League encounter.

It was the hosts’ fourth Crossover League victory in as many fixtures.

The visitors, led by skipper Nhlanhla Nhlapo, who won the pre-main coin toss battle against his counterpart, Len Meyer, posted a moderate 167 in 42 overs after opting to bat first, with Siyethemba Nyembe hitting 42 runs.

Boksburg began their chase on the back foot, with key batsmen John Haywood and Freddie Whitehorne dismissed for ducks.

With important wickets lost early on, Meyer’s troops needed to remain composed and duly obliged when Michael Holtzhausen (36) and JP van Staden’s (22) combined 58 was added to by Morne Badenhorst (25) and Sean Holder (16).

With the target well in sight for the PG Park outfit, Juandre Jordaan (unbeaten 33) and Carel du Preez (seven not out), who also took three wickets, ensured victory for Boksburg after 43.2 overs.

In the bowling stakes, Nhlapo joined Boksburg’s du Preez in the hat-trick category, while Haywood and Meyer each took two wickets. – @SabeloBoksburg
