CBC wins thriller against Actonville
The CBC Old Boys cricket Premier XI made a winning return to the second half of the Premier League campaign, with a thrilling one-wicket away win over a resilient Actonville Spurs side, at Lords Cricket Grounds, on Sunday, January 11.
The second-placed visitors, who won the pre-match toss, opted to field against the hosts on a slow wicket, which saw both sides struggle behind the bat.
Spurs lost three wickets early into their innings, before new signing Charles Prinsloo (33) and Easterns player Praveshan Chetty (25) stabilised their side’s rapid wicket fall, with their 71-run partnership.
The hosts’ middle and lower order never took advantage of that partnership, however, and the team were bowled out for 114 runs.
Gert van Zyl proved to be a nuisance for Spurs with his excellent bowling figures of 4/19.
CBC began their chase and, as with Spurs, lost wickets early on and were suddenly in trouble at 16/3 during the lunch break.
At the resumption of play, Spurs captain Clayton August and his bowlers got stuck into the CBC batting order and reduced the visitors to 46/6.
Stubborn resistance from Dylan Bennie (15) and skipper Willie Bernhardt (19) brought CBC closer to the target, despite the home side’s bowlers taking wickets at regular intervals.
With the match finely poised at 91/9, Jean Rossouw’s unbeaten 29 carried his team over the line – handing CBC a single wicket win.
August (4/22) continued his excellent form with the ball and was the star performer with the leather for Spurs, while Hussain Shakeel Ahmed 2/24 and Chetty 2/20, also stood out. – @SabeloBoksburg
