Breeds tackles gruelling 50 Miler challenge
Boksburg’s Jarryd Breeds from East Rand Kayak club finished the 50 Miler Lettie Pants Race in a time of four hours and 28 minutes to secure a top 100 finish as the 68th K1 racer, during the weekend of December 6 and 7.
Gauteng paddlers carried on with their preparation for the upcoming Dusi Race when they streamed towards the Dusi valley for the additional training.
With low rainfall during those days, the 80km-long river stretch proved tougher than usual, as paddlers were forced to carry their boats out of the river on numerous occasions and negotiate their way up steep hills and down slippery slopes, as parts of the river weren’t suitable due to the low water levels.
This made for an excellent training and preparation weekend for the endurance challenge of the Dusi River Race, which maintains its 1964 traditions of such portages in line with the first races hosted on the river, before the advent of dams.
The Dusi race is scheduled for February next year. – @SabeloBoksburg
