Titans win rain-affected encounter
The Unlimited Titans secured their first win of the 2014 Ram Slam T20 Challenge when they defeated the Bizhub Highveld Lions by 27 runs, at Willowmoore Park, on Friday, November 21, in a rain-reduced match.
Despite the on and off rainfall on Friday night, a good Benoni crowd gathered at the stadium to witness the battle between Gauteng’s two franchise teams.
It was opening batsman Henry Davids who got the home team off to an excellent start, with a brilliant 75 off 42 deliveries (four sixes and seven fours).
The former Titans skipper, relieved of his duties to focus on his batting, helped guide his team to a total of 161 in 16 overs.
Lions opening bat and crowd-favourite Chris Gayle could not get into his usual hard-hitting antics with the bat, despite a four and a six, as he fell early to veteran bowler Ethy Mbhalati, for 11.
Themba Bavuma and Neil McKenzie also fell cheaply as the Lions managed just 52 runs by the halfway stage of their innings.
The efforts of middle-order batsmen Jean Symes (57 off 32 balls) and Dwaine Pretorius (27 off 14 balls) were not enough to steer the visitors to victory within their 16 overs.
- At the time of going to press, the Titans were scheduled to host KwaZulu-Natal’s Sunfoil Dolphins, at Willowmoore Park, on Wednesday, November 26.
