Reviewer: Ischke de Jager
Book: Comfortable in Your Own Skin
Author: Leandie du Randt
Publisher: Random House Struik
Rating: A real pleasant read; feel-good book enriched with self-help life lessons.
Stemming from her passion for helping people and based on her own experience, Comfortable in Your Own Skin is specifically aimed at teenage girls to help them to develop self-confidence and to be the best version of themselves possible.
Written in a relaxed style that teenagers will relate to, much of the book contains wisdom and lessons to deal with life.
Presented as a three-week course with practical exercises at the end of each day, the life issues covers topics of particular importance to teenagers such as alcohol and drug abuse, peer pressure, eating disorders, body image, and the deeper issues of thoughts, inner self-confidence and spiritual well-being.
Each week, however, has a different focus.
There are also some QR codes for you to scan with your cellphone to show you how the author approached the relevant exercise.
The practical advice will help teenage girls to think differently about themselves, to be more confident, and to handle and report abuse.
The author touches important subjects which are labelled by some people as taboo – topics that are sometimes never discussed, as if the problem does not exist.
Although there is a strong spiritual message, the author doesn’t “preach” and makes it clear that it’s for anyone, whatever their belief system.
Being a little older, with a little bit more life-experience than the teenage girls for which the book is written for, I can relate to the author’s view.
The author encourages readers to make use of the free counselling helpline, MobieG that is available on Mxit.
