Bokkie Park receives a personal touch
Teachers, parents and children from Junior Academy Nursery School branches in Boksburg, along with staff members of Trinity Protection Services, came together in an initiative to clean up the Bokkie Park, on Saturday, June 21.
Suretha Barnard, owner of Junior Academy, says the joint venture is an attempt to keep the park child, animal and family-friendly.
“The park is a big attraction where children can play for free. To clean the park is a community project that’s very close to our hearts where we will also fix what needs to be fixed to create a better environment for the children and animals,” she says.
Barnard explains that the team of volunteers is going to paint the play equipment, enlarge the pig enclosure, fix the fence so the bunnies don’t run out, and build a shelter and wall for the guinea pigs.
Six-year-old Zenelle Pienaar attends Junior Academy in Sunward Park.
“I came to make the park clean,” she says as she feeds the rabbits. .
Adel Luus, the co-director of Trinity Protection Services, says her children were devastated when a section of the train burnt down.
“Children must learn from a young age to keep parks clean; we are not saying that the metro don’t clean the park, we are just saying that the more hands, the better,” she says, adding that other initiatives in the pipeline include creating water bowls under all the taps and planting trees and a vegetable garden.
“In the meantime, I have approached a fruit and vegetable supermarket to donate vegetables, which I will drop off for the animals,” she adds.
Luus says that the chicken cages will also be given tender loving care. – @TumeloBoksburg
