Bowls SA introduces bowling system

South African lawn bowls is to introduce a ranking system for its 26 000 bowlers, to be known as the Players’ Ranking System.

According to Bowls SA operations manager, John Ravenscroft, the system is due to go live at the end of August.

Final details have been thrashed out at a meeting held under chairmanship of Bowls SA president Allan Freeman, with Perfect Delivery Brokers understood to be the title sponsors.

The system will operate on the Perfect Delivery IT platform, emulating the successful ranking system adopted by cricket on the Coopers and Lybrand platform.

“Our ranking system will not form part of the national selection criteria, but is intended merely to stimulate interest among top competitive players,” says Freeman.

Players, as do golfers for their handicap system, will electronically input their own success at tournaments. The system works with points being allocated at various tournaments, with all allocated on an equal basis except for district events where they are weighted according to the size of the district.

The sponsors’ managing director, GC Swanepoel, adds: “We have worked closely with Bowls SA for many years; it is a prestigious and vital service that has been the wish of the players for some time.”
