Boksburg win local derby
Boksburg striker Eddie Cassonga delivered the decisive strike in the second half, as the Blues beat CBC Old Boys 1-0 in their Easterns Premier League match at the Boksburg City Stadium, on Saturday, May 24.
Both teams came in missing several key players due to injury with in-form CBC frontman David de Oliveira being the stand-out name on his side’s treatment list.
“The match was of high quality,” said CBC coach, Glen Brierly.
“We just couldn’t put away our chances which cost us, but I can’t help but think if our in-form striker (De Oliveira) was available for the game, it would have been a different result. He has hit form and has just come off a hat-trick.”
Chances were few and far between in the encounter with an intense midfield battle denying both sets of strikers freedom on the ball.
With the match heading for a 0-0 stalemate, Cassonga received the ball on the edge of the CBC 18-yard box before releasing a powerful low shot, which beat the away side’s goalkeeper before landing inside the far post.
Old Boys responded with a few chances and caused trouble down the homeside’s right flank, in particular with some inviting crosses, but the Blues’ defense remained resolute, with skipper Matthew Cooley making vital tackles to keep out the visitors.
“The game plan was to spread and tire the CBC wingers for the second half with our attacking 3-4-3 formation where we had more control of the game and scored, said Cooley.”

“I’m extremely happy with our performance, we all worked very hard and CBC had a tough defense to beat.”
Old boys coach, Brierly, added that they will not allow the loss spoil their focus.
“It’s been a tough season for us and we’re still trying to find our feet in the Premier League, but we will remain focus and take each game as it comes.
“We always enjoy playing Boksburg and we’re eagerly looking forward to the return fixture.”
