ERIC to host Brazil 2014 Mini World Cup

With a little less than a month to go until the inception of the eagerly-awaited 2014 FIFA soccer World Cup in Brazil, the East Rand Italian Club (ERIC) will give locals a feel of the tournament when it hosts its own “Brazil 2014 Mini World Cup”.

The month-long open tournament, which is open for both men and women, will run from May 31 to June 29.

Like the global show-piece, the ERIC version will feature 32 “countries” for men and ladies with eight groups containing four teams each. The top two teams from each group will progress to the knock-out stages.

Participating teams will choose which country they wish to represent, and the team which pays earliest will be given first-option benefit of the country chosen.

Entry fee per team is R1 000 with each allowed a maximum of 10 players. Registration and payment to compete in the mini football jamboree must be completed by Wednesday, May 28.

Tournament rules

* Each team will be allowed six-a-side with four substitutions. No metal studs will be allowed and a normal points system will apply.

* Teams who finish the round-robin rounds level on points will be separated on a goal difference basis.

* Should teams be level on goal difference, they’ll go to a penalty shoot-out.

* Men playing dates: Sunday, June 1; Saturday, June 7; Sunday, June 15; Saturday, June 21.

* Ladies playing dates: Saturday, May 31; Sunday, June 8; Saturday, June 14; Sunday, June 22.
