Prison official gets 90hrs community service for child abuse

The Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court has ordered the senior Correctional Services officer, who assaulted a teenage girl, to perform community service.

Mzwandile Mkhuma, of Boksburg prison, was charged with grievous bodily harm in connection to the attack on a 10-year-old girl at the Boksburg Prison last year.

He took off his uniform’s leather belt and hit the girl multiple times on her legs and thighs, leaving, dark bruises and scratches.

This year, on March 26, Mkhuma pleaded guilty to the count of grievous bodily harm and he was on the same day found guilty.

Magistrate Jurg Vivier was on March 28, expected to pass judgement in the case of Mkhuma.

The passing of the sentence was postponed until April 22.

Mkhuma was ordered to carry out 90 hours unpaid work, at the East Rand Mounted Unit, under the supervision of an officer of the unit.

His service consists of cleaning of the stable, terrain of the unit and any other duty which the nominated office may deem fit.

He was expected to commence on Wednesday, April 3, and he was ordered to report at the unit at 8am, seven days a week.

Mkhuma’s daily shifts consist of five hours per day and he is required to perform work on behalf of the community until April 19.

The accused will then report back to the court in Vosloorus, at 8.30am, on April 22.

Non-compliance with all of the above shall result in a warrant of arrest being issued against Mkhuma.

Mkhuma confronted the victim while she was with her twin sister and a friend, playing on the grounds of Boksburg Prison, where they live with their parents.

The three children were said to have been picking garden mushrooms when the prison officerreprimanded them.

He apparently brutally beat one of the children with his belt and the others managed to escape and they were not harmed.

The parent of the victim laid charges of assault against the official at Dawn Park police.
