Stone beats Baloyi

Stone van Aswegen defeated Willis Baloyi by split decision in their welterweight bout at the “Thunder Struck” box-and-dine event held at Emperors Palace on Tuesday evening, March 25.

The two fighters produced a boxing spectacle in their six-round absorbing showdown, equally exchanging blows and giving the judges a tricky task of separating them.

Two of the three ring officials scored it 59-55, 58-56 in favour of the Boksburg fighter, with the third official scoring it 58-56 in favour of the rugged Baloyi.

On the night’s main event, Dowayne Combrink brushed aside veteran Simon Mokoena in the second round of their super-middleweight bout.

Mokoena, 43, failed to respond to the referee’s count 1.19 minutes into the round following a big blow to the jaw.

Combrink, who’s 23 years Mokoena’s junior, produced a typical quick and vicious attack from the opening bell, delivering damaging shots to the veteran, who never seemed to recover going into the second round.

Combrink followed-up with the decisive strike in round two, leaving Mokoena dazed against the ropes and prompting referee Phillip du Randt to count him out.

The tournament was presented by African Ring in association with Golden Gloves and Emperors Palace.
