EMM’s head of Waste Management Services Department, Qaphile Gcwensa, says this means that each resident of the metro must know on which day of the week their refuse will be collected and put their bins or bags out on that day.
“As part of our business process re-engineering, we have been considering ways to improve our operational efficiencies, with the view to enhancing service delivery,” he says.
“Introducing this fixed system is one of the results of the rationalisation exercise we have undertaken, not only to improve productivity, but also to save operational costs.”
Gcwensa says the municipality has, for a number of years, been implementing a move-on system, which has proved to be inefficient.
“All ratepayers will still receive a colour-coded removal calendar, which will reflect the same collection day for the 52 weeks of the year, eliminating confusion on refuse collection days,” he explains.
“Furthermore, waste collection services will be provided on all public holidays, except December 25, and this will result in a consistent service all year around.”
Areas with cycles that run from January to December have already started operating on the fixed calendar, while those whose cycle runs from March to February will be changing over from next Monday (March 3).
The calendars will also be available in due course, on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za.
Residents are urged to ensure that their refuse is on the sidewalk by 7am on the collection day.

I think a single day for collection is much better than the other system. But I have heard that the black refuse bags are going to be replaced by dustbins which I think is a bad idea.
