Sunward Park’s Goju Karate Academy wins at KSA Nationals
Members of the Goju Karate Academy, Sensei Marius Madgwick and Gareth Hird, won bronze medals at the Karate South Africa (KSA) All-Style Karate Championships, held in Bloemfontein recently.
Madgwick claimed his bronze after finishing third in Senior Individual Kata, with Hird also finishing third in u-21 Kata at the tournament, where a total of eight provinces were represented.
Fellow academy members Olivia Smargiasso and Noel Nicholas barely missed out on top three finishes, with Smargiasso finishing fifth and the latter losing his last fight for third place in a nail-biting tie-breaker vote from the judges. He also finished fifth.
The academy also paid tribute to its members Derek Hird and Yolandi Coertze who represented Gauteng as judges for the first time at national level. Sensei Tarryn Madgwick also passed her national exams to obtain her National Referee Qualification.
