Thousands of ID’s issued for voter registration

Three-hundred-and-fifteen Home Affairs Offices were open to the public on February 8 and 9 for the voter registration weekend.

According to the departmental spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa the work of the offices was complimented by the deployment of 73 mobile trucks to reach out to those areas where the department does not have a footprint

“The Department of Home Affairs expresses satisfaction with the services it rendered during this time. As a consequence, 19 862 IDs were issued, 2 081 Temporary Identity Certificates were issued, 100 001 ID applications were received, 4 540 smart ID cards processed, 22 prisons across SA were visited in which 32 IDs and nine Temporary Identity Certificates were issued,” says Mamoepa.

“We extend our gratitude to the 2 691 Home Affairs officers who were on duty nationally to assist the citizenry in acquiring the necessary enabling documents to register to vote,” adds Mamoepa.

Mamoepa says this year’s elections in May will mark a significant milestone in the history of South Africa marking 20 years of the dawn of peace, freedom and democracy.

“In the same breadth, we take this opportunity to thank those members of the public who took time off their busy personal and other responsibilities to visit Home Affairs offices to acquire the various forms of identity to enable them to register to vote.”
