Game, set and match for Gauteng seniors
Gauteng East Seniors Tennis launched the New Year by hosting the annual provincial tennis tournament at Benoni Tennis Centre, Parkrand Tennis Complex, and Sunward Park Tennis Club over the last two weekends of January.
The tournament is one of the largest in the Tennis South Africa Tournaments, and sees players vying for top spots to gain the much sought after ranking points.
This year saw over 224 entrants from a variety of provinces.
Newly-appointed chairman of Gauteng East Seniors Tennis, Owen O’Neill, said the tournament went well, and even the weather played its part.
“We went through over 1 296 balls on 29 courts and completed 512 matches in four-and-a-half days. It was fast-paced and we are proud we rallied through.

“We aim to make this the largest tournament on the Seniors Tour and attract the top players in the future.
“Tennis is a great sport, and is one of the few sports where all age groups, genders and experience levels can participate. We want to encourage players to get involved as this can only be good for the growth of tennis while promoting a healthy exercise regime for all.
“We also want to bring back provincial pride in the sport to ensure Gauteng East makes it mark on the court. We are very proud of how well our provincial players did in the tournament, and with more tournament experience we hope to see them soar.”
