Alert: Local hijackings spike

Following an increase in hijackings in Boksburg, police are warning the community to take extra precautions to prevent falling prey to hijackers.

They advise residents to be aware of two vehicles linked to hijackings that happened in the area.

Police admitted that the rate of hijacking has increased drastically, in recent months.

According to Reiger Park police spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela, the robbers suspected to be behind the recent spate of car thefts and hijackings in the area are driving in a Silver Polo and silver BMW.

“Five vehicles were hijacked in our precinct in January alone. Thugs usually target top-of-the-range BMW, Mercedes Benz and Polo vehicles,” says Phathela.

He says Reiger Park and Boksburg policing precincts were affected.

It includes the Boksburg CBD, Reiger Park, Delmore and other areas within the two policing precincts.

“After carrying out a hijacking, criminals leave the area and move to their next targeted spot, presumably because they know the area is being monitored,” says Phathela.

“We warn motorists to be aware while they are parking their vehicles or pulling in their driveways.”

Phathela says motorists need to be careful also when approaching stop streets and intersections.

“These are some of the spot where hijackers target drivers; so it is important to ensure that car windows are closed properly and doors are locked.”

The community is urged to report any illegal activities that they may be aware of by calling their nearest police station or alternatively, contact Crime Stop on 086 0010 111.
